EGO STORAGE SYSTEM

The storage system EGO is nothing more than a simple and elementary piece of office furniture. However, the consistent idea of simplicity alone makes EGO unique in the landscape of office furniture programs. EGO is an uncompromising storage system which does not diminish in value through numerous features and complicated modules. Nevertheless, this system offers a wealth of possibilities for use and addresses any space needs. EGO hides many sophisticated innovations that make this consistent approach possible. Carefully manufactured handles and uniform joints contrast plain cabinet faces, which are available in three basic types: flap, drawer, folding door. The simplicity of the system shows not only in its design but also in its handling. Simple design, planning and ordering is part of the idea. The concept focuses not only on furniture but on man and the quality of man’s working environment. “Ego” [lat. ego = I] in the sense of man as the center and starting point of man’s sphere of action. But also “Ego” in the sense of thoroughgoingness of consistently simple design.

It was important to Thomas Feichtner to see his vision of the contemporary working world reflected in his design. He wanted to create a simple and authentic piece of furniture that works well at the office as well as at home. For the sole reason that he thinks that these areas should not be seen as separated – as if they were parallel worlds. The design of the system contains formal synergies with Thomas Feichtner’s typical design vocabulary. The storage system features integrative grip edges instead of adapted fittings. Thus the edge per se is a major design element of Thomas Feichtner’s work and the link to his independent expression in design. Viewed in this light the grip edge is not only a functional element but also a re current and identity-establishing design feature. The repetitive element of the grip edge creates the characteristic style of the storage system. EGO is manufactured by Blaha, a company of long-standing tradition. Blaha has manufactured office furniture systems and has been associated with the history of modern workplace design for more than eighty years. Blaha runs a special “Office Ideas Center” for the design of office concepts and is the editor of numerous publications on ergonomics and office workplace. With the storage system EGO Blaha combines its methodic approach with contemporary Austrian design. 

Das Stauraumsystem EGO ist nicht mehr als ein simples und elementares Büromöbel. Allerdings macht allein der konsequente Gedanke seiner Schlichtheit EGO einzigartig in der Menge unübersichtlicher Büromöbelprogramme. EGO ist ein kompromissloses Stauraumsystem, das sich nicht in zahlreichen Features und komplizierten Modulen verliert. Dennoch bietet das System zahlreiche Anwendungsmöglichkeiten und bleibt offen für jede Raumsituation. So verbergen sich in EGO zahlreiche raffinierte Innovationen, die diesen konsequenten Ansatz erst möglich machen. Sorgfältig gearbeitete Griffe und ein gleichmäßiges Fugenbild kontrastieren mit glatten Fronten, die in den drei Grundtypen Klappe, Lade, Flügeltür ausgeführt sind. Die Einfachheit des Systems zeigt sich nicht nur in seiner Form, sondern gleichermaßen in seinem Handling. Eine einfache Gestaltung, Planung und Bestellung ist Teil der Idee. Nicht das Möbel, sondern der Mensch und die Qualität seines Arbeitsumfeldes stehen im Mittelpunkt des Konzepts. „Ego“ [lat. ego – ich] im Sinne des Menschen als Zentrum und Ausgangspunkt seines Wirkungsbereichs sowie „Ego“ im Sinne der Kompromisslosigkeit des konsequent einfachen Entwurfs.

Thomas Feichtner war es wichtig, seine Vision von einer zeitgenössischen Arbeitswelt in seinem Entwurf wiederzufinden. Er wollte ein simples und authentisches Möbel schaffen, das im Büro genauso gut funktioniert wie zu Hause. Allein deshalb, weil in seiner Sicht diese Bereiche nicht getrennt voneinander – als wären es Parallelwelten – betrachtet werden dürfen. In der Gestaltung des Systems findet man formale Synergien zu der für Thomas Feichtner typischen Formensprache. Das Stauraumsystem hat keinerlei adaptierte Beschläge, sondern integrative Greifkanten. Die Kante ist das vornehmliche Gestaltungselement der Arbeiten von Thomas Feichtner und die Verbindung zu seinem eigenständigen Ausdruck im Design. So gesehen ist die Greifkante nicht nur als funktionales Element, sondern auch als ein wiederkehrendes und identitätstiftendes Gestaltungsmerkmal zu verstehen. Erst die Wiederholung der Greifkante schafft den eigenen Duktus des Stauraumsystems. Hersteller von EGO ist das Traditionsunternehmen Blaha. Seit mehr als achtzig Jahren ist Blaha Produzent für Büromöbelsysteme und untrennbar mit der Entwicklungsgeschichte moderner Arbeitsplätze verbunden. Blaha führt ein eigenes „Büro Ideen Zentrum“ zur Entfaltung neuer Bürokonzepte und ist Herausgeber zahlreicher Publikationen zu den Themen Ergonomie und Büroarbeitsplatz.
