Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur Augarten and Neue Wiener Werkstätte have in common not only a love of craftsmanship and tradition but also their work with designer Thomas Feichtner, who has conceived numerous products for both firms. This was reason enough to initiate a joint project that unites the two firms’ respective expertise in a single object. What Feichtner ended up designing is a table consisting of a porcelain basin supported by a wooden construction. It thus represents a symbiosis of both disciplines, porcelain manufacturing and carpentry. The circular porcelain basin is integrated into the table’s rectangular top in a formally pleasing way, ending flush with the table frame. Manufacturing a tabletop of this size so precisely as to fit perfectly on the frame was a challenge for Augarten, since porcelain shrinks by up to 14% when fired. But the result is a masterpiece that sports Augarten’s striped shield at the center of the basin. The carpentry shops’ workmanship is every bit as impressive. The table frame—made of intelligently joined, black-painted oak and separated by a shadow gap from the removable basin—provides stable support. The legs taper downward, a formal approach already employed by Feichtner in NWW’s successful Vitória Collecton.

The Porcelain Table is offered in two heights and can be used in all sorts of different ways: as a side table and fruit bowl, as a foyer reception table, or as a centerpiece in which to keep and display very special items.
